Dimethyl carbonate

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC), with the chemical formula C3H6O3 and a molecular weight of 90.08, is a transparent liquid at room temperature with a slight fragrance. It is sparingly soluble in water but miscible in any proportion with alcohols, ketones, esters, and other solvents. DMC is an important organic synthesis intermediate. Its molecular structure contains carbonyl, methyl, and methoxy groups, giving it excellent reactivity. It can replace highly toxic substances such as dimethyl ester and chloromethane as a carbonylating agent, methylating agent, and methoxylating agent.
